Zambia is food secure upto April 2020 – Katambo

Written by on May 8, 2019

Agriculture Minister Micheal Katambo says the estimated crop production for the 2018/2019 season is enough to sustain the country up to April 2020.

Mr Katambo said this at a press briefing of  the crop forecasting survey for the 2018/2019 agricultural season and the food security status for the 2019/2020 marketing season.

Mr Katambo says the country is food secure adding that although an export of 120,000 metric tonnes of mealie meal was allowed, less than 10,000 metric tonnes was exported prior to the current export restrictions.

And Mr Katambo says the greatest threat to food security has been the illegal export of mealie meal especially from the Coppertbelt.

Zambia experienced prolonged dry spells between January and February this year.
