Zambia Union for Financial Institutions and Allied Workers ZUFIAW is opposed to the new five months maternity leave for women in the new employment act.
ZUFIAW Secretary General Chingati Msiska says the five months maternity leave will bring about unproductivity among workers.
Mr. Msiska says enforcement of the law will also push most women out of employment as employers will not manage paying workers out of work for six months.
Mr. Msiska has called on government to reconsider its decision and amend the law.
He says government should consider reducing the maternity leave from five months to atleast four.
But some residents of Lusaka have welcomed the move by government to increase the maternity leave from three to five months.
Residents talked to say the five months maternity leave will give chance for mothers to nurse their babies.
