Government has restricted the export of mealie meal and maize with immediate effect as an interim measure to safeguard food security in the country.
Agriculture Minister Micheal Katambo says the recent regulation of mealie meal exports was meant to assist grain traders and farmers to sell their maize and that has been accomplished.
Mr Katambo has clarified that exports of mealie meal were allowed for millers on the quantities they were buying from farmers and traders who had verified maize stocks.
He says consultations with the Grain Traders Association of Zambia and Zambia National Farmers Union have revealed that all maize earmarked for export has now been bought by millers.
Mr Katambo says mealie meal exports is now not allowed as crop forecast results are being awaited.
