2019 fiscal consolidation unrealistic – CTPD

Written by on March 29, 2019

The Center for Trade Policy and Development CTPD says it foresees government target towards achieving fiscal consolidation being unrealistic in 2019.

CTPD Researcher Bright Chizonde says this is due to factors including policy inconsistencies, rising public debt and potential reductions in revenue generation as recently announced by the Zambia Revenue Authority.

Mr. Chizonde says the failure by government to adhere to its own debt management strategy remains the greatest challenge to achieving fiscal consolidation in 2019.

He says government in 2018, announced a number austerity of measures aimed at reducing the fiscal deficit but remains adamant regarding the need to reduce spending.

Mr. Chizonde suggests that government should therefore focus on assessing the current spending priorities if it wishes to achieve fiscal consolidation in 2019.
