The construction of a permanent drainage system at Lusaka’s Chingwere and Chunga cemeteries has reached an advanced stage.
Sun, Lusaka City Council (LCC) Director Engineering Services, Mr Bright Banda, told The Sun that so far, 50 percent of the works has been done on the project expected to cost K600, 000.
Mr Banda said that the new drainage system will control the flow of rain water at the two cemeteries.
The decision to construct a drainage system at the cemeteries follows the damage of some graves and unearthing of some human remains by runoff water after heavy downpours.
Last month, LCC officials discovered some human remains which were unearthed at the Chingwere cemetery following heavy rains.
“The council, through the Engineering Services Department, last month engaged a contractor, Treo Zambia Limited, to construct a permanent drainage at Chingwere cemetery that includes stone pitching at a cost of K600, 000.00. So far, works are progressing well, the contractor is always on site,” Mr Banda said.
