ZBF bans Chomba

ZAMBIA Boxing Federation (ZBF) General Secretary Bright Chomba has been suspended over alleged misapplication of K6,000 in 2018, vice president and chairman for disciplinary committee Jack Mbewe has confirmed.
In a letter of suspension to Chomba, Mbewe said the general secretary has been suspended for allegedly failing to pay back the money.
“This serves to inform you that as ZBF disciplinary committee chairman, I have decided to suspend you from performing all ZBF functions as general secretary.
“This is so because in the first count/charge, you have failed to pay back the K6,000 which you used last year without authority from ZBF EXCO,” read the letter in part.
Mbewe said the move by Chomba was a breach of the ZBF constitution.
He said in the second count/charge, Chomba is alleged to have written a letter dated 4th April 2018 suggesting that ZNS Boxing Club was invited by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) in Solwezi when that was not true.
In the process two named officials from ZNS signed for money when there was no such event.
Mbewe said the action by Chomba also tarnished the image of OQBP who did not invite ZBF to the said tournament.
Mbewe said the federation had instituted investigations into the two issues and ordered Chomba to stop performing ZBF duties as doing so was likely to scare away ZNS, Zambia Air Force, and other boxing sponsors.
The Sun recently reported that Chomba had misapplied the federation’s funds and was in June last year asked to pay back the said amounts or risk disciplinary action.
Chomba last week had told the Sun that he had paid back the K6000 but was unable to say when he made the payments.
Efforts to get Chomba’s comment proved futile as his phone and text messages went unanswered.
